INSTALLATION ------------ If you want a quick installation of the programmes and data files on the BATS diskette to your computer hard drive---which I assume is drive C---then you may use the install utility. From the DOS prompt just type a:install A directory called BATS will be created on drive C. The contents of the BATS diskette will then be copied to that directory. The data directories will be copied to subdirectories of the BATS directory. When installation is complete (it takes about a minute) you can run BATS by typing C:\BATS\BATS at the DOS prompt. Enjoy! BATS 2.1 -------- EXISTING MENU ITEMS UNAVAILABLE IN 2.1 1. Histogram 2. Periodogram (partly functional only) 3. Autocorrelation : 11 lags only 4. Individual series deletion On-line help is not yet implemented. UNDOCUMENTED FEATURES IN 2.1 1. Temporary DOS shell option on the Configuration menu. 2. Hotkey 'show current model definition' F2 (in menu selection mode). KNOWN BUGS IN 2.1 1. Specifying time 1 as an outlier will eventually cause weird things to happen to the screen display and the computer to hang. 2. Cross correlation (X-Y plot) fails for series with many values if there are lots of identical values. This is a fault with the recursive nature of the quicksort algorithm as implemented...the stack overflows! 3. File reading fails if the DOS read-only attribute is set. 4. Reading/writing files with an empty floppy disc drive: BATS does not intercept the DOS trap so the "Drive not ready. Abort, retry, fail" message appears (somewhere) on the screen. Recovery is possible from this when reading by pressing f (for the fail option) then . Recovery is not possible when writing. Selecting a (abort) causes DOS to terminate BATS (and leaving your computer with an 'invisible' cursor). 5. TimePlot fails with estimate series if the model fit is perfect. 6. Autocorrelation is known to hang the machine on occasion. WINBATS 2.1 ----------- INI file configuration 1. line types and colours 2. format of numeric displays 3. directories 4. monitor 5. menu item descriptions There are NO interactive graphics and no PostScript support. Use Windows facilities to cut and paste displays to other applications for subsequent modification and printing. WINBATS 2.13 ------------ March 1996 ---------- PostScript support in WinBATS ----------------------------- 1. The file BATS.PS1 MUST be installed in the directory from which WinBATS is loaded. 2. Every graph displayed by BATS during a session is written to a temporary file in the BATS working directory for PostScript files (see Appendix 9.1 of the book). Creating a PostScript file of any of the graphs may be done at any time during a session. (i) Select Data/Input-Output/Write/Postscript. (ii) Choose the graph you wish to write to file. (iii) Specify a name for the output file (and a new directory location if desired). (iv) Select OK. The file will be written in the selected directory (the BATS working directory for PostScript files unless otherwise specified in (iii)). The temporary files are named p.bat where is an integer; these files are deleted when the BATS session is terminated. .FRE File Reading Fix --------------------- A bug in loading .FRE files which contain a single data series has been fixed. (The bug was in the Windows programme only.) Update: October 1996 -------------------- Windows 95 problem ------------------ Fixed. The version of winbats.exe should now run on Windows3.1 and Windows95. Forthcoming ----------- Watch this space: multiplicative trend-seasonal models are being implemented.
